The 2017 edition of the Miss Universe pageant has begun in Las Vegas. She had come up just short of the honour in 2014 and persevered despite chatter in some corners that she should give up. Jamaica's previous top ten placements at Miss Universe included Sandra Foster (1989), Kimberly Mais (1991) Christine Straw (2004) and Nicole Haughton (1999).
Along with the title, Nel-Peters earned a yearlong salary, a luxury apartment in New York City for the duration of her reign and more prizes.
Bennett placed third in the competition in which 92 countries competed.
Ntsiki Mazwai, who is also a social activist, made the declaration via Twitter following Nel-Peters' first-place finish in the worldwide beauty pageant. Host Steve Harvey says Cambodia, Laos and Nepal are being represented for the first time in the show.
"As Miss Universe, you have to be confident in who you are as an individual", she said.

Nel-Peters developed a program called Unbreakable that trains women in self-defense. Jamaica's Solange Sinclair secured a Top 10 spot and grabbed the Caribbean Queen of Beauty award in the 2017 Miss World pageant in Sanya, China last weekend.
"In some places, women get paid 75 percent of what men earn for doing the same job, working the same hours, and I do not believe that is right", she said. "She is a woman that nothing is ever too much to ask for, and I think that is exactly who I am".
Miss South Africa was crowned Miss Universe.

"The Universe is not livelier with you as a shining star". Four candidates from The Americas (North America, Central America, South America, Caribbean), four candidates from Europe, four candidates from Asia, Africa, and the Oceania, plus four wild cards.
It was the second strong finish by Jamaica in a beauty pageant in as many weeks.
