The 22-year-old Nel-Peters has earned a yearlong salary, a luxury apartment in New York City for the duration of her reign and more prizes.
She was crowned after beating 91 other contestants from all over the world.

The beauty queen was a firm favourite throughout the competition but it was the question and answer section that sealed the deal.
Peters extends the Philippines' placement streak in Miss Universe to 8 editions from 2010, which started with Venus Raj and culminated in Pia Wrtzbach's 2015 victory.
The Miss Universe Pageant previously aired on NBC and Univision when the Miss Universe Organization was owned by future President Donald Trump.
Wurtzbach was one of the judges for the telecast. This year, the broadcast was hosted by Steve Harvey and modelAshley Graham, while Fergie and Rachel Platten took the stage to perform during the show. "She is a woman that has nothing too much to ask for and that is exactly who I am".
Peters was not called during the regional announcements. The part time student announced she had been undergoing extensive training and plans to make her nation proud.
Peters advanced to the top 16 via wildcard and showcased her toned figure in the swimsuit round.
