That's part of the reason the school's annual "Veterans assembly" continues to be a hit with staff, students and area vets, according to principal Nancy Melonas. For numerous students, the ceremony meant taking the time to thank moms, dads, grandpas, grandmas, aunts, and uncles for their service. Burch advised the children to visit with veterans, ask them about their stories and thank them for their service.
After Thursday's ceremony, active duty and reserve military from Westover, as well as Army and Air Force ROTC units from UMass Amherst, traveled to the elementary school to share lunch with the students. "This is something we do to show our local veterans and their families our appreciation". Led by the Jersey Shore Ministerium, it will feature an honor guard, scriptures, prayers, patriotic hymns, recognition of the fallen, interpreted folding of the flag, Young Marines as ushers, sign language interpretation by the Jersey Shore High School Sign Language Club, and special music by the Fair Play Brass, a multi-church choir, and others. For information, call Larry Kanfer at 217-398-2000.
"We have been hosting the annual veteran's day assembly for the last 14 years", Melonas said. The program is free and open to the public.
