After conceding only two games to Elina Svitolina in their opening Red-Group match, 6-2, 6-0, in under an hour, she dealt out similar treatment to the woman who reached No1 just a week before travelling to Singapore, Simona Halep, 6-0, 6-2, and in only 63 minutes.
In the other match of the evening, world number eight Garcia kept her WTA Finals campaign alive with an epic three-set victory over Svitolina.
However, such a comment further adds to the sense that there is a growing tendency... As she cranked up the victor count, she broke again, and served out her first ever win in Singapore, 7-5. "I'm not sad. Of course, I'm upset that I lost, but it's been a great year and I'm happy to go to the holiday now". In her press conference after her loss to Garcia, Svitolina was told by press she hadn't been eliminated yet.
Williams won the WTA Finals in 2008 and reached the final in 2009, which was the last time she appeared in the year-end tournament.More news: How powerful is your passport?

It was a stellar comeback from Garcia, who blew two chances to win the first set tie break. She not only needs to beat a Wozniacki playing at her relentless and precision best but must hope that Svitolina bounces back to beat Halep. I wish I had no chance to qualify, but - yeah, okay. "If it happens again I'm going to be thankful, but for but now it's a long way to go".
"There is no such a thing as a comfortable player on tour, especially at this tournament", Svitolina said of her success against Halep this year.
Even though she endured disappointment in Singapore, Halep will finish the year as World No 1 if Karolina Pliskova does not lift the trophy on Sunday. "I think it was one of my bad days". I didn't feel the ball, I don't know why. "Wasn't being ever in this situation, so I felt weird today".
Garcia capitalised and won four straight games en route to levelling the match, before outlasting Wozniacki in a tense third set. "I mean, my game was completely off", she said. So everything I have in my head is just to shake this off and just play better the next time.
