The film is a remake of the 1986 original of the same name.
Tracking estimates initially projected the Denis Villeneuve directed sci-fi film to be on par with debut earnings of 2015's "Mad Max: Fury Road", which raked in $45 million, The Wrap noted.

While "Blade Runner 2049" is always something to look at, an overly elaborate script and some other bad habits common to today's sequel machinery - such as glaring product placement - have broken the "Blade Runner" spell. That easily topped Kate Winslet and Idris Elba's "The Mountain Between Us, " which debuted in second with $10.6 million. Directed by Hany Abu-Assad, the Dollars 35 million film tells the tale of two strangers who are stranded in the wilderness after surviving a plane crash.
According to Box Office Mojo, the long-awaited followup to the 1982 classic only made an estimated $31.5 million. Based on the Hasbro toys and television series, the movie's voice cast includes Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Uzo Aduba and singer Sia.
"Blade Runner 2049" is screening in Beirut-area cinemas. The movie has received a 56 percent rotten rating from 32 critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
