The infant was found outside the Cypress Creek apartment complex (pictured) in Houston, Texas, at 5am on Thursday.
But Peterson, who was on his way to work at 5 a.m., discovered something completely different: an hours-old newborn baby, covered in ants and dirt, laying in a flowerbed. Houston Police followed a trail of blood to one of the apartments where they found a 21 year old woman who admitted she was the baby's mother, and had dumped the little girl to get rid of her.
It is believed that the woman gave birth to the child in the apartment, according to investigators, and then left the baby outside in the bushes. She may face charges of child abandonment.
The baby girl was transported to the hospital for evaluation and is in good health, the Daily Mail reports.
He told local Channel 2 News: "She was there on the ground in the flower bed with ants". Baldwin could be heard saying it was insane and that someone had left their newborn baby out there, while telling Peterson to call 911. In court, graphic evidence was presented as investigators said the umbilical cord was ripped, not cut out, causing the baby to have a bacterial infection.More news: Charlottesville Police ID suspect authorities say plowed into a group of protesters

The detectives went up to the door and knocked, but the people inside refused to open the door.
"He heard a murmur and a cry, what he thought was actually a cat", Harris County Deputy Thomas Gilliland told reporters.
The 21-year-old mother is in custody and is now undergoing medical and psychological evaluations.
"It's like they just left the baby out there like it was trash", Baldwin said.
The newborn will remain in the hospital's custody until custody proceedings are finished, Child Protective Services on Friday. The officers involved with the investigation also felt that if the neighbor had not happened by and heard the baby crying, they would be looking at a homicide instead of a case with a happy ending for the infant.
