Naidu will be the 13th vice president of India. The result for the same will be declared by the evening today. The opposition parties led by Congress (18 parties) have been supporting Gopala Krishna Gandhi who is the former Governor of West Bengal.
The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Janata Dal (United) which had supported NDA nominee Ramnath Kovind for the post of president, had made a decision to back opposition nominee Gandhi.
Born in 1949 in Nellore district of what is today Andhra Pradesh, Naidu cut his teeth in student politics. He served as the Party President for 2 years.
His skills made the most of him and he fought his first election to victory from Udayagiri constituency in the 1978 Andhra Pradesh assembly election. Besides BJP veteran LK Advani, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya also cast their votes.

He was also the BJP national president for two consecutive terms from July 2002 to October 2004.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his congratulations. Speaking to the media, Naidu said that he was a non-party man and is confident of getting the majority of the votes.
While Naidu's selection as a vice presidential candidate will be a bonus for the smooth running of the Rajya Sabha, it will likely be a loss for Modi.

The Rajya Sabha has a number of political heavyweights, such as P Chidambaram, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Digvijay Singh, Kapil Sibal in the Congress; Ram Gopal Yadav in the Samajwadi Party, and so on.
