"The character will have passed away", Thom Sherman, the network's senior executive vice president of programming, told reporters on Tuesday at the TV critics' summer press tour in Beverly Hills, California. "True, I've been let go from the show", she wrote on Twitter at the time.
"When everybody collectively saw how Leah and Kevin were together in those last couple episodes, there was an undeniable spark there", Kahl said.
"We love both those actors, and we did not want to lose them", said Kahl, who didn't address any specifics.
He also denied that the show is "morphing" into King of Queens with the addition of Remini.

James plays a retired police officer on the series. The second season of Remini's reality show, Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath will premiere August 15, 2017, on A&E.
Entertainment Weekly reported that James' character will become an employee of a security company run by Remini this season.
"It will be treated with dignity and respect, something that will have taken place in the past."
Last year CBS debuted a new series starring Kevin James as a gentle-if a little dumb-schlub who's just trying to relax on Long Island with his family.
