A USA federal judge ruled in April 2017 that Volkswagen "must pay a. 2.8 billion [dollars] criminal fine for rigging diesel-powered vehicles to cheat on government emissions tests".
Prosecutors and Schmidt's attorneys held a status conference Tuesday inside the U.S. District Court in Detroit, and prosecutors advised a judge that Schmidt "was planning to plead guilty", said David Ashenfelter, a spokesperson for the court. He is expected to admit to charges of conspiracy and violating the Clean Air Act in federal court in Detroit, one of the people said.
"A lawyer for Schmidt, David DuMouchel, declined to comment". He must formally plead guilty at a new hearing on 4 August, the same source said. Schmidt is one of eight current and former executives charged in the USA emissions probe. The typical sentencing for all of these is 169 years, though it's unlikely that the judge will deal the Schmidt a life term.
USA prosecutors have gathered more than 4.3 million documents covering more than 40 million pages in the ongoing probe. Volkswagen AG (OTCMKTS:VLKAY) is slated to release its half yearly results on July 27th.
