Retron 5 set for June 6 release
Back on May 25, 2013, First Arkansas News published an article about the Hyperkin Retron 5. Go ahead and click the aforementioned link for more details, but here’s a summary — the Retron 5 is designed to play games for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, the Japanese and European versions of those consoles and some Nintendo Game Boy games.
Oh, and the console is designed to upscale all of those games to 720p so they will look great on HDTV sets. Anyone who has hooked up a classic console to an HDTV set knows the problem with doing that — games look pixelated and horrible. Hyperkin announced the Retron 5 was to be released in the fall of 2013. That didn’t happen. Hyperkin said it would show up by the end of the year. Nope.
Hyperkin then said the Retron 5 was going to come out in the first quarter of 2014 and that didn’t happen. The machine was supposed to appear in April and then May. No and no. Oh, and the price of the machine went from the original $99.99 to $139.99 earlier this year, too.
Today, Hyperkin splashed the above picture on its Facebook page. So, there you have it — Hyperkin has received a shipment of Retron 5 units and it appears they will be available to at least some happy retro gamers on June 6.
I preordered my Retron 5 back in September. Expect a full review of the machine after I receive mine.
