Awesome Site of the Week: Rock City Times

By: 2 June 2013 27 Comments

Rock City TimesWelcome to yet another installment in our Awesome Site of the Week — a feature that we’re sure will maybe one day, perhaps, become a big hit with our tens of fans.

We at First Arkansas News started this dandy feature in hopes of pointing out some sites that simply ooze awesome but may have been overlooked. You’ll not find any eBays or Amazons mentioned in this feature because, well, everyone’s heard of those. What you will find are some sites that deserve your attention. Make sure to visit them and get happy, pilgrim.

So, what site have we deemed awesome this week? An Arkansas-based site called Rock City Times. What is it? A satirical news source focused on Arkansas in general and Little Rock in particular. Think of The Onion, only not as hostile and you’ll start to get the idea.

One of the more entertaining aspects of the site is that there are readers who seem to miss the fact that Rock City Times is dedicated to parody. Have a look, for example, at this article about a man who went missing for three years after trying to find the cafeteria at UAMS in Little Rock.

Click here for more awesome sitesNow, that one is a hoot to anyone who has visited a patient at UAMS and has gotten lost in there. Still, there was a comment from someone who took the thing seriously. You’ll find comments from some people throughout the site who seem both confused and angry about the content. The site owners apparently love such comments as several are highlighted with pride on Rock City‘s “praise” page.

At any rate, the site is a heck of a lot of fun and sure to be appreciated by any Arkansan who is even slightly amused by the various goings on in the Natural State. Click here to visit the site and make sure to follow it on Twitter and Facebook while you’re over there. There are a lot of things about Arkansas that lend themselves to parody (well, that’s true no matter where you are), and keeping up with Rock City‘s unique spin on events such as River Fest, the latest shenanigans from our pie-loving former Arkansas State Treasurer and the declining sales of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette are always good for a chuckle or two. The site is awesome. Totally awesome.
