Lum and Abner Festival 2013If you’re in western Arkansas (or live close to it) and are looking for something to do this weekend, bear in mind that the 36th annual Lum & Abner Festival is scheduled in Mena on Friday and Saturday.

Who were Lum and Abner? A couple of hillbilly-type characters created by Norris “Tuffy” Goff and Chester Lauck which became the most popular old time radio comedy team Arkansas ever produced. The team started out in the Mena area, made it big during the Golden Age of Radio, had an Arkansas community renamed in honor of the fictional Pine Ridge in which their radio show was set and even starred in a few movies. If you’re not familiar with Lum & Abner, you’ll find a solid history of the formation, impact and significance of the characters here.

If you want more information about the festival, click here to visit the event’s Facebook page or here for the event page hosted by the Arkansas Department of Parks & Tourism.

If you’re a fan of Lum and Abner, make sure to click here every Sunday to see the weekly comic strip featuring the duo. If your a fan of old time radio in general, click here to listen to some OTR episodes that we post weekly.
