Big changes in store for KEWI

By: 4 November 2011 No Comment

State Senator Jeremy Hutchinson (R-Dist. 22) said Saline County listeners can expect plenty of changes from KEWI AM-690.

Hutchinson and Grant Merrill purchased the Benton radio station from Landers Broadcasting — which has held KEWI since 1992 — on Tuesday (Nov. 1). Hutchinson’s district covers most of Saline County and part of Pulaski County.

He said listeners can expect two things — a format change and for the station to simulcast on both 690-AM and 93.7-FM starting December 1. The FM transmitter, Hutchinson said, will expand the station’s range to counties bordering Saline County. As for the revised programming, Hutchinson said that station will still focus on Saline County issues, but will add more sports and local talk to the station’s format.

Sports coverage, he said, will increase significantly as the station has the rights in its market to carry St. Louis Cardinals baseball games and has a subscription to Yahoo! Sports — a nationally syndicated program. The station will continue to focus on local sports teams — notably the Benton Panthers and Bryant Hornets.

As for local talk, Hutchinson said the station’s management is lining up shows hosted by local talent. They will be mindful of the fact KEWI is the only radio station located in Saline County and, as such, should be a primary source for people wanting to learn about and discuss local issues.

Hutchinson said people interested in what’s in store for the station should visit its site on the Inernet at saline247.com.
