Benton Panthers make the playoffs

By: 7 November 2011 One Comment

For the second year in a row, the Benton Panthers have made the high school football playoffs.

How did the Panthers get in with a 3-7 record? Because high school football in Arkansas is a bit unique in the way teams are selected for a run at the state title.

In short, there are 16 teams in Class 6A and the conference is further divided into two divisions. In the 6A South — Benton’s division — the top six of the eight teams make the playoffs. Little Rock McClellan and Little Rock Fair didn’t make the cut, leaving the door open for Benton to enter the playoffs even with a less than stellar record.

Marion, by the way, is in the 6A East.

It’s worth mentioning that Benton has beaten both McClellan and Fair this year and — last week — made sure Fair remained winless on the season with 50-30 victory. Benton has also beat Jacksonville this season, and that victory may give the Panthers more than a bit of hope.

Why? Benton faces Marion (7-3) in the first round of the playoffs on Friday. Marion lost to Jacksonville last week — a fact that will likely boost the confidence of the Panthers as they square off against Marion.

At any rate, we’ll post the results of the game as soon as we get them and follow Benton’s progress in the playoffs this season. Stay tuned…
