Lum and Abner coming to ‘Saline Courier’

By: 7 September 2011 One Comment

It was a great day for us here at First Arkansas News.

Why? The Saline Courier — a newspaper based here in Benton — made the decision to publish our Lum and Abner comic strip every Sunday. It goes without saying we’re pleased as can be that the Courier will start running the strip. That paper is, after all, in our backyard and we’ve heard from a few fans of the Lum and Abner old time radio show that they’d love to read the comic strip but aren’t too keen on accessing it through the Internet. While we’re obviously sold on Internet-based publishing, we well understand that some people prefer printed publications and we want to reach as many members of our potential audience as we can.

The Courier will start running Lum and Abner on Sunday. That newspaper’s 7,345 Sunday subscribers will join the Mena Star’s 4,700 subscribers who have had access to the Lum and Abner strip since the end of July. That brings the weekly circulation of the comic to approximately 12,045 readers and that’s not bad for a project that started off with an emphasis on publishing only on the Internet.

Again, we’re tickled that the Courier has seen the value of our project and is actively helping preserve the legacy an old time radio comedy duo that have reached legendary status here in their home state of Arkansas. Stay tuned — we hope to announce that more print publications are picking up the strip in the near future. And why not? When you take those great characters and add some great artwork from Donnie Pitchford and original stories, you’ve got a winning combination.
