Benton fumbles home opener, 50-22
The final score exceeded the seven-point Pine Bluff win Hootens.com predicted. The Panthers fell to 1-3 on the season and Pine Bluff improved to 2-2. Prior to the game, Hootens ranked Benton 8th in the 16-team Class 6A while Pine Bluff was ranked 2nd. Top-ranked El Dorado improved its season record to 4-0 with 41-0 victory over Little Rock Fair on Friday.
At any rate, what stood between Benton and victory? In addition to the speedy and large players that dominated Pine Bluff’s offensive and defensive lines,Benton blew two opportunities to score (a dropped touchdown pass prior to the half and a drive within Pine Bluff’s 10-yardline that resulted in no score) and struggled with turnovers and a speculative passing game throughout the contest.
Perhaps Benton’s fortunes will improve next week at 7 p.m. when Lake Hamilton (2-2, ranked 3rd in Class 6A) comes to town for homecoming at C.W. Lewis Stadium.
