Arkansas Author: Rhonda Franz

By: 25 August 2011 3 Comments

Name: Rhonda Franz

Location: outside of Lowell

Where I’ve been published/tell about each:

I’m a contributing editor, where write I tips, commentary, and informational articles for parents and families. Earlier this year, one of my essays was included in the collection, Chicken Soup for the Soul for New Moms. My work has been published with local favorites, Peekaboo magazine and NWAMotherlode. I’ve also written for CalgarysChild magazine, and was recently featured on the TODAY show MomBlogs for MSNBC.  I’ve had a couple of editorials included in the local newspaper, but I’m not sure that counts.

What inspires me to write? For my writing jobs, deadlines are quite inspiring.

For everything else, mostly day to day experiences: the mess I make in my kitchen when I cook, watching my son give Easter eggs away to children who didn’t find any, the mother who yelled at me at the library because my two-year old was chewing on a crayon. My writing is influenced by my relationship with Christ, other people’s stories, my background as a teacher, issues I feel strongly about, scenes from my childhood, and morals or themes I can take away from something I witnessed. Writing has helped me process difficult situations, and helped me find humor in everyday trials.

Advice for someone who might want to be an author in the Natural State?

Join a serious writer’s group, or at least find a few people who will critique your writing—honestly. The only reason my writing has been published is because my writer’s group got their hands on it, and made it better. If I ever publish any of the longer pieces or books-in-progress currently hanging out on my hard drive, it will be because they saw it first.

Anything else you would like for our readers to know?

I’m a city girl transplant living in the Arkansas woods with my husband and three children. I’m currently on a blogging break, but hope to get back to very soon.
