Lum and Abner donation levels finalized

By: 30 May 2011 One Comment

Just the other day, First Arkansas News announced that the site was taking donations to pay for the rights to publish a Lum and Abner comic strip penned by Donnie Pitchford, president of the National Lum and Abner Society.

A lot of our regular readers are familiar with our efforts to publish the strip, which is of course based on characters developed by Chet Lauck and Tuffy Goff. Those characters sent Lauck and Goff to international fame through their old time radio (OTR) programs and movies and are a part of Arkansas’ cultural history — those two were a couple of Arkansas boys that made good, so the comic strip is an attempt to help preserve their legacies.

We have secured the rights to pursue the viability of publishing a comic strip from Chester Lauck Jr., but there is a condition that we must meet — we’ve got to raise enough money to pay for the rights to use the Lum and Abner characters. Jim Russell, our intrepid advertising rep, came up with the idea of seeking donations to raise that money and we have implemented his suggestion — you’ll find a donation link in the right sidebar on this site through which cash can be submitted for the project through our PayPal account.

Bear in mind that all donations will be returned if we don’t raise enough money to pursue the project. Don’t just take our word for it — PayPal has fraud protection built in to protect consumers and that’s one of the reasons we chose to use that service. Under PayPal’s terms, we can refund any donations within 60 days and will do just that if this project doesn’t come together as we hope.

One question we’ve gotten from some readers is a good one — what do I get for a donation? All donors will be acknowledged on a permanent sponsorship page that is located here (fair warning — it is still under development). Those who give at least $25 will receive a text link back to the site of their choice and larger donors will get banner ads. The various donation levels and what comes with the are as follows:

Chet Lauck and Tuffy Goff Platinum Circle ($400)

Pine Ridge Planetarium Club
($200)

250x150250x150

Lon and Kathy Stucker Appreciation Society
($100)

Pine Ridge Possums Booster Club
($50)

Includes a large text link

Pine Ridge Library Club
($25)

Includes a medium text link

Lum and Abner Appreciation League
(Less than $25)

No text link, but a dandy acknowledgement

Is the project worth your money? Well, that decision is up to you. You can have a look at a sample strip here and judge for yourself. It’s worth mentioning that even a donation of $25 will buy a text link back to your site (or one of your choice) for a year on a high traffic site, and that’s a heck of a deal.

If you’d like to see this project succeed, just click that donation link and give what you can afford. If you have any questions, just send an email to First Arkansas News Founder Ethan C. Nobles to Ethan@FirstArkansasNews.net.
