Weekend OTR: Wings to Victory — Lt. Roddy Johns (Howard Duff)

By: 16 April 2011 One Comment

There’s just something about American World War II-era entertainment, isn’t there?

Some of the shows from that era were straight-up propaganda while others merely heaped on the patriotism in an attempt to boost morale and paint the Axis as the embodiment of pure evil. Wings to Victory was one of those gung-ho radio programs that was put out there to boost morale and gain recruits. The stories were based on military reports, but the names of the players were changed and there was — no doubt — more than a little embellishment in order to dial up the drama.

This particular episode was pretty typical of the Wings to Victory series. You’ve got a young flyer who finds courage and proves himself to be a “real American.” Here’s a bonus — Howard Duff (of Sam Spade fame) played the title role. Fun stuff.
