Weekend OTR — Bob Burns Show

By: 24 September 2010 One Comment

It should come as no surprise that old time radio personalities from the Natural State are viewed favorably here at First Arkansas News.

While Lum and Abner are generally the sentimental favorites in these parts, comedian Bob Burns deserves some attention, as well. The Van Buren native is perhaps best known for his invention of the bazooka (a ridiculous instrument made from a whiskey funnel and a couple of pipes and, yes, the namesake of a tank-bashing weapon from World War II) and portraying the more backward elements of rural Arkansas.

Was Burns’ portrayal of Arkansas terribly accurate? Not always, but he was undeniably gifted and entertaining. His show typically featured the music of Spike Jones and His City Slickers and was generally a hoot. And the episode here features the great George Burns and Gracie Allen. Bonus!

As always, this week’s installment of Weekend OTR is brought to you by our friends at  The Cat’s always low prices for old time radio shows is lower than usual right now because an end-of-summer sale is going on over there. Click the aforementioned link and pay The Cat a visit, huh?

Having said all of that, turn up those speakers (or adjust those headphones), click the below link and enjoy this week’s show.
