Walmart Announces Shareholders’ Week Concerts

By: 30 May 2010 11 Comments

ROGERS — Trying to get Walmart to confirm information about concerts and entertainment coming for the annual shareholders’ meeting week, in the past, has been frustrating.

Walmart wanted to keep the acts secret until the day of or day before concerts and shareholders’ activities.

Though, those who work at company headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., or who work for major vendors involved in shareholders’ week activities and planning typically knew weeks in advance who was coming.

This year, the retailer not only confirms the acts that are coming to perform concerts, but is tweeting about the events 140 characters at a time on Twitter.

Walmart holds its annual meeting Friday in Fayetteville, Ark., but does not wait until the end of the workweek to give the thousands of visitors to Washington and Benton counties something to do.

Bring on the music!

Zac Brown Band

• 7 p.m. Tuesday, Bud Walton Arena on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville, Ark., the Zac Brown Band and country artist Tim McGraw perform.

On Twitter, follow @TimMcGrawArtist and @ZacBrownBand.

Walmart employees get first seating, then the public can enter the arena at 6:45 p.m. for the concert.

Those who appreciate Walmart’s generosity of letting the general public see a concert for free can bring nonperishable food to donate to the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank in Bethel Heights, Ark.

It’s a tiny town near Springdale, Ark., just a 10-minute or less drive up Interstate 540 from Fayetteville.

Walmart recently announced a $2 billion contribution spread throughout five years to help end hunger, so the food drive fits with that mission. Follow @Walmartgiving on Twitter to learn more.

• 7 p.m. Wednesday, Bud Walton Arena, REO Speedwagon and the Barenaked Ladies perform.

REO Speedwagon

I well remember cuddling with Jesse Flowers, my now husband of nearly 21 years, in his black Chevrolet Nova he had restored, listening to REO Speedwagon’s “Keep on Loving You” on a rainy night.

I look forward to hearing the band live and “Riding the Storm Out” with them.

Again, Walmart employees enter the arena first, then the general public can go in and find seats starting at 6:45 p.m.

Follow @BarenakedLadies on Twitter. And no, they are not unclothed women, but a Canadian band comprised of men.

Barenaked Ladies

• 7 p.m., Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville, Aleks Syntek, a Mexican singer and composer, and A.B. Quintanilla III of Miami Beach, Fla., perform. Follow @Syntekoficial and @abquintanilla3 on Twitter.

Tweeting the Meeting

The handle @Walmartmeeting is what the retailer wants tweople (Twitter people) to follow, and also is promoting the trending topic designator #WMT2010.

Anyone who tweets about the shareholders’ activities or meeting should use that designator, so Twitter users can easily search and find all tweets about the events.

If you like what I write or what to see what other information I convey during shareholders’ meeting, follow @RogersLana on Twitter. Also, follow @FirstArkNews.

For more Walmart tweets, go to the retailers’ Twitter feeds on http://walmartstores.com/twitter.

That’s where all the official Walmart tweets from the retailers’ various Twitter accounts go to live. They include tweets from Walmart official accounts and employees in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil and Japan.

Tweets from Sam’s Club, about gaming, MP3s and other Walmart accounts also are aggregated on the Twitter feed within walmartstores.com, Walmart’s site for public relations and information distributed to the media and investors.

But hey, anyone can go to walmartstores.com and read all about it.
